Mathematics
At The Hayes Primary School, we believe that mathematics is essential to everyday life and teaches us how to make sense of the world around us. We intend for our pupils to be confident, resilient mathematicians who are able to apply their mathematical knowledge to real life contexts.
Mathematical skills are taught following a mastery curriculum using White Rose Maths to ensure consistency within our school. Learning is cumulative and progressive and tailored to meet the needs of every child, with all lessons including an element of fluency and recall of the four basic operations (ie: addition, subtraction, division, multiplication), calculation, creative problem solving and reasoning. In EYFS and KS1, children start to embed Concrete Pictorial Abstract throughout their maths learning. This helps children to visualise the question or problem in order to fully understand the concept. We aim to support children in remembering what they have been taught previously by revising concepts regularly. Alongside the White Rose Maths resources, we use various aids to support children’s learning, to include physical apparatus such as cubes, counters or Numicon. Mathematical vocabulary is taught throughout the curriculum and revisited at regular intervals until it is secure. We support learning further by reinforcing mental arithmetic and quick recall of calculations, through Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars.
