The Governing Body is responsible for the long term strategic direction of the school. It has statutory responsibilities including agreeing the school budget and expenditure and ensuring key policies are in place. Governors do not get involved in the day to day running of the school. The role is one of ‘critical friend’, asking questions and providing challenge and support in any areas in which they have expertise. Governor training is provided – new governors can attend training sessions with Octavo or training outside of Croydon. Additionally, The Hayes runs its own training when required.

Governors’ terms of office are expected to be 4 years. The full Governing Board meet twice a term and alongside this, governors are also required to join one of two separate committees: Resources (which includes finance) and Quality of Education. These committees meet once every half term. Their function is both supportive, but also to provide challenge and provide strategic input and governance:

Resources – enable and have oversight of all financial processes so that the school can effectively and efficiently manage expenditure and associated forecasts.  Including:  to agree major outlays, monitor the budget profile and monthly spending, to agree salaries, assess the financial impact on staff changes and amendments, review job descriptions, performance management, dismissals and to sit on interview panels. Parent governors do not sit on any grievance panels. Alongside this, to review and have oversight of all areas of maintenance, health and safety, including security. To sit on interview panels. To review and agree any personnel policies and agree any HR Policies.

    * Quality of Education – to review and agree any policies and curricular priorities, assessment data:  learning and progress of pupils, well-being of staff and children, parental involvement and the school’s provision of the extended day.

We also have ‘link’ governors with areas of specific interest linked to the School Improvement Plan, this list is not exhaustive. More information about the Board of Governors can be obtained from the Chair of Governors, or any member of the Board of Governors, or the Head teacher.
